From my personal experience, I'd like to give some takes on this mental issue.
Every therapist or psychologist seems to accept formal training and follow every instruction devotedly.
When I was in the psych center, I met over five different doctors a day, and I had to repeat what made me depressed over and over again in a silly circle that got me nowhere.
My original psychologist didn't even notice I was being sent to the hospital. Although he didn't charge any of my absent fees, he also didn't follow up on my situation.
I have lots of things to share, but the only thing that comes to my mind right now is don't ever make any promise to the patients that you can solve their problems for sure.
I didn't blame you for failing to save me then, but things would be better if you got my hope high and I followed your every instruction, visited people you said you'd already introduced me to them, and it turned out they didn't even know me and again, I had to repeat my depression.
It's okay to let patients know you are also average people. I don't think a piece of question or advice is inappropriate. To some 'logical mental' patients, simply require them to spend some time and write down whether it's truly worth sacrificing yourself for the things you are obsessed with.
Maybe I would have found my life goal 8 years ago.
