Oh, I hope you could come to Taiwan with “Pride and Prejudice” to save our English education, too. Although our president stated that she would make English become an official language in Taiwan, I didn’t see the future of this prospect, at least, according to the never-changing English class. I was teaching English in a junior high school before, and all I was required to do was teach according to the textbook and pass out the paper with multiple choice to test the grammar. We never had chance to read a simple book written in English. When you went to college, unless you chose English major, other majors still used textbooks to learn English from the teacher. And do you know what English major students read? All the must-read books for American junior and high school students.

I wrote an article called “English is hard to learn” to express my journey of learning English in Taiwan. I hope you go check it out. And it explains a lot why we learn English from elementary, but we still have difficulties speaking with foreigners.
